TH 602 - The Trinity


This course explores the Mystery of God in the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity, studying the nature of the Trinity and the operations, and relationships of each Person to each other and with creation. The approach is systematic and historical, with emphasis on God’s self-revelation in creation and salvation history, taught from the perspective of Saints Augustine and Aquinas.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Develop a framework for the study of the Trinity.
  • Define the essential terms related to the nature of the Trinity.
  • List the distinguishing characteristics between nature and person and unity and essence among the Divine Persons.
  • Articulate the foundation of Trinitarian dogma from the perspective of Scripture and Tradition.
  • Outline the major Christological controversies and their doctrinal resolutions.
  • Explicate the theological concept of Divine Processions and circuminsession with regard to each person of the Trinity.
  • Discuss the Divine Missions of the Trinity within the Trinitarian Life and in the economy of salvation.
  • Develop a thesis on the knowability of the Mystery of the Holy Trinity from the perspectives of faith and reason grounded in Scripture and Tradition.
  • Demonstrate the ways in which the proper and appropriated names of the Trinity are derived.
