EH 226 - American Civil Rights Literature (SR)


Credits: 4 credits

This course examines American civil rights movements through their literature: speeches, editorials, novels, poems, short stories, music, and films. Students trace the course of modern battles for civil rights from their roots through the present day, and they analyze civil rights literature and its themes with particular attention to ethical and moral issues the works raise.

This is a Sustainability-Related (SR)   course.

 

 

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze and interpret American civil rights literature, including its purpose, method, and ethical/moral dimensions
  2. Conduct literary research using a variety of critical perspectives and apply that research to both written and oral communications
  3. Describe and discuss American civil rights literature;
  4. Identify, describe, and discuss ethical and political issues in, and surrounding, American civil rights literature and its criticisms and
  5. Demonstrate good communication skills, revealed in both writing and speaking.
