EH 219 - Introduction to British Literature (SR)

Today’s’ students are tomorrow’s decision makers, independent of their ultimate careers, it will be their decisions that collectively decide the fate of our plant.

This course examines the rich and varied traditions of British Literature, with a particular focus on ethical and political issues (e.g. marginalization, social justice, sustainability, radical hospitality) in, and surrounding, British Literature and its criticism.  Students will engage with a broad range of texts, both canonical and non-canonical, in order to gain a better understanding of British writers and their works.

This is a Sustainability-Related (SR)   course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following:
 

  1. Analyze and interpret British Literature, including its purpose, method, and ethical/moral dimensions
  2. Conduct literary research using a variety of critical perspectives and apply that research to both written and oral communications
  3. Describe and discuss canonical and non-canonical British literature
  4. Identify, describe, and discuss ethical and political issues in, and surrounding, British Literature and its criticism
  5. Demonstrate good communication skills, revealed in both writing and speaking
