EH 200 - Introduction to American Literature (SR)

Credits: (4 credits)


Today’s students are tomorrow’s decision-makers, independent of their ultimate careers, it will be their decisions that collectively decide the fate of our planet.  This course examines the rich and varied traditions of American Literature, with a particular focus on ethical and political issues (e.g. marginalization, social justice, sustainability, radical hospitality) in, and surrounding, American Literature and its criticism.  Students will engage with a broad range of texts, both canonical and non-canonical, in order to gain a better understanding of American writers and their works.

 

This is a Sustainability-Related (SR)   course.

None

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following:
 

  1. Analyze and interpret American literature, including its purpose, method, and ethical/moral dimensions
  2. Conduct literary research using a variety of critical perspectives and apply that research to both written and oral communications
  3. Describe and discuss canonical and non-canonical American literature
  4. Identify, describe, and discuss ethical and political issues in, and surrounding, American Literature and its criticism
  5. Demonstrate good communication skills, revealed in both writing and speaking
