NP 682 - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Theory II


This course provides a problem-based case approach to explore the theories and practice of mental healthcare for patients in accordance with nationally recognized PMHNP competencies. This course serves as a companion course to NP 683. The course is designed to provide experience with assessment, diagnosis, planning, management and health promotion for patients with mental illness.

Prerequisites: all MSN Core course, NP 600, NP 680, and NP 681. Can have as a co-requisite NP 683.

Course outcomes:

  • Uses ethical principles when making decisions based on the patient visit (MSN Essentials I)
  • Discuss health care for patients with mental illness incorporating ethical, legal, cultural, economic, political and psychosocial principles. (MSN Essentials II, VII)
  • Demonstrate appropriate and effective oral and written communication with patients, their families, and other health care professionals. (MSN Essentials VII)
  • Integrates teaching and learning principles and environmental data in providing culturally humble care and developing the role of the PMHNP as health educator. (MSN Essentials VIII, IX)
  • Illustrate the elements of developmentally appropriate comprehensive and focused health histories and physical examinations for patients with mental illness (MSN Essentials IV, IX)
  • Use current research related to diagnostic and treatment protocols to improve the delivery of health care to patients with mental illness (MSN Essentials IV, IX)
  • Interpret the effectiveness of interventions and care management strategies in improving the health status of individuals. (MSN Essentials VI, IX)
  • Synthesize the theoretical, scientific and contemporary clinical knowledge for the evidence based assessment and management of both health and illness states in patients. (MSN Essentials I, IV, IX)
  • Apply research, adaptation and related theories to develop management plans for health promotion, disease prevention, and stable chronic illnesses for patients with mental illness (MSN Essentials IV, IX)
