TH 622 (SF) - Introduction to Integral Ecology


This course will be an interdisciplinary exploration of the comprehensive understanding of our world and its current crisis that lies behind Laudato Si’ through the critical gazes of Wendell Berry, Pablo Martinez de Anguita, Stratford Caldecott and several other authors. Classes will be based on the assigned readings which will span topics from the sense of wonder, to natural ecology, modern science, technology, philosophy, and ethics. 

This is a Sustainability-Focused (SF) course.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Gain an appreciation for the magnificence of the natural world we live in and the sense of wonder we experience before it
  • Discern the complex ethical dilemmas at the core of current ecological conflicts
  • Identify the modern tendencies towards mechanism and reductionism and how they impact societies and ecosystems
  • Survey the diverse proposals of the environmental movements
  • Analyze the underlying philosophical conceptions of nature
  • Explore realistic and holistic solutions to the ecological problems we face
