EH 223 - America in the 1940’s (SR)

Credits: 4 credits

The 1940s was a unique decade in American history, and this is reflected in the literature and other arts of the time. Using an interdisciplinary approach, this course examines a number of American works (e.g. stories, poems, radio broadcasts, films) to help students come to an understanding of the singular nature of the American experience in the 1940s, particularly as articulated in the country’s literature. Students analyze works and their themes with particular attention to ethical and moral issues that are raised.

This is a Sustainability-Related (SR)  course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze and interpret American literature of the 1940s, including its purpose, method, and ethical/moral dimensions
  2. Conduct literary research using a variety of critical perspectives and apply that research to both written and oral communications
  3. Describe and discuss American literature of the 1940s;
  4. Identify, describe, and discuss ethical and political issues in, and surrounding, American literature of the 1940’s and its criticism and 
  5. Demonstrate good communication skills, revealed in both writing and speaking.
