HS 500 - Healthcare in the US


This course provides a comprehensive overview of the overlapping health care systems in the United States. It describes and assesses the various system Bloom’s Taxonomy Levels and components, as well as the interrelationship of these elements to the total organization of public policy and health services delivery. The student is expected to understand the biological, behavioral, cultural, and organizational factors affecting the use, organization, and outcomes of health services. The roles of hospitals, health personnel, public health agencies, payers, and regulators are examined. Current system dilemmas and issues are identified.

Course Learning Objectives

  1. Utilize effective communication, writing, and presentation skills.
  2. Understand all primary aspects of healthcare administration necessary to be an effective administrator and provide a foundation for your future course work.
  3. Determine in which areas you have interest in pursuing additional education and experience.
  4. Identify the foundations of the U.S. healthcare systems, including primary components, and recent and past developments that have led to the evolution of the system, as well as how the U.S. system compares to that of other countries.
  5. Evaluate the resources required for the provision of health services, including technology, professionals, and financing
  6. Describe the types of services available in healthcare, including inpatient, outpatient, and long-term care.
  7. Analyze how cost, access to services, and quality all work together to determine the effectiveness of the system.
  8. Explain how health policy is formulated and how stakeholders shape the system.
