NU 601 - Advanced Health Assessment


The course provides the master’s-prepared graduate nurse with the tools to perform a comprehensive health assessment throughout the lifespan. The course builds on knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and health assessment skills previously attained in undergraduate nursing education. Students demonstrate the ability to communicate information in both written and oral form to members of the multi-disciplinary health care team.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Uses ethical principles when obtaining the health history and performing the physical exam(MSN Essential I)
  • Use effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills as a nurse leader in the comprehensive health assessment process(MSN Essential II, VII)
  • Examines intricacies of the health history and physical examfor patients across the lifespan (MSN Essential III, VI, VII, VIII, IX)
  • Develop competency in physical exam techniques for all body systems and history taking skills using a respectful, caring approach (MSN Essential I, VIII, IX)
  • Elicit a comprehensive health history while incorporating psychosocial, cultural, environmental and spiritual factors that enhance or impede an individual’s health. (MSN Essential I, VIII, IX)
  • Analyze critically the results of the physical examination to determine if the results are considered normal or a variant of normal or abnormal in nature. (MSN Essential IX)
