HU 100 - Introduction to Human Services


This course provides an overview of the field of Human Services. Students will learn about both historical changes and the existing structure of Human service delivery models, as well as become familiar with values and principles currently embraced in the field. The course will cover the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to work as a culturally competent professional in diverse human service settings. There will be an emphasis on the wide-ranging needs of various populations receiving services, and special attention will be paid to the role of the human service professional and critical elements of the supporting relationship.

  1.       Describe the roles and responsibilities of the Human Service professional.
  2.       Articulate the changes in the field of Human Services, and identify key aspects of the current service delivery model.
  3.       Demonstrate an awareness of some of the multifaceted needs of diverse populations who are commonly served by human service professionals.
  4.       Analyze the competencies of human service professionals, and describe the ways in which they contribute to forming healthy relationships with individuals, families, and groups.
  5.       Assess the professional values embraced in the field, and explain how they can be applied to day-to-day practice and ethical dilemmas.
