HA 205 - American Healthcare Systems


This course provides an introduction and overview of the United States health care system. The overview includes the concepts of health and health care, including consumer health care-seeking behaviors. The course describes the roles of government and the private sector, and the varied, constantly changing levels of care in the U.S. health system. Included in this course is information about future health care reform as it relates to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completing this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Discuss the basic nature of the United States health care system. You will also assimilate your learning as a health care professional and/or consumer with the required readings of the course to understand and discuss the complexities, benefits and barriers to health care in the United States
  • Understand and discuss the concepts of health and health care as they relate to U.S health care system outcomes and individual health care-seeking behaviors. Describe and discuss the evolution of health care in the United States and be able to compare U.S. health status to that of other industrialized nations
  • Understand and discuss the public health responsibilities of local, state and federal governments
  • Explain the impacts of competition and regulation on health care quality
  • Discuss the benefits and barriers to health care usage created by different types of health care insurance
  • Understand and discuss the various levels of health care along the continuum of care in the U.S. health care system
  • Explain the professional, technological and financial aspects of the U.S. health care system
  • Understand and discuss the meaning of health care costs, dimensions of access to care, and quality
  • Understand and discuss the future of health services delivery in the United States
  • Describe the health care system processes related to outpatient and primary care; inpatient facilities, managed care and integrated organizations, and long-term care and
    health care services for special populations
  • Discuss the precedents of the Patient Protection and Affordability Care Act of 2010
