TH 305 - Christian Community I: Ancient and Medieval Church

The first of a two-part survey of the evolution of the Christian tradition from Apostolic times to the present. Although concerned primarily with the story of the Catholic West, Christian Community I includes the history of the Orthodox East and the gradual separation of the Latin and Greek Churches in the course of the Middle Ages. In addition to the evolution of church structures, this course focuses on the inner life of the Christian tradition as revealed in practice and devotional piety, and exemplified in the lives of its saints and mystics. Primary sources and historical novels supplement the lecture notes and study text and provide indispensable windows into the variety of experiences in the Christian tradition.
