TH 555 - Introduction to the Old Testament

The course presents an inquiry into the background and narrative of the texts of the Old Testament.  An essential element of the study of these texts is the clarification of their historicity.  In this course students will become familiar with the structure and content of the Old Testament.  They will develop a sense of the rich literacy and cultural heritage of the Middle East.  To acknowledge the Old Testament texts as Christian scripture is to acknowledge that it functions in some normative way to shape and guide the life of Christian communities and the lives of individual Christians. No serious study of the New Testament can be made without knowledge of the Old.
