Political Science B.A.

The Political Science major provides students with the basic principles of political science, with a special focus on the four main divisions in political theory: American government, international studies, comparative politics, and public administration. Upon completion of the requirements of this major, students will be better prepared for continued study at the graduate level in political studies, law, or several of the related areas well served by this academic foundation. In addition, the Political Science major requires two semesters of the same foreign language.

Washington Center Semester Internship Program (16 credits)

Junior or Senior Political Science majors with a minimum of a 2.75 GPA are eligible to apply for a semester long Washington Center Internship.  Students accepted to the program live in Washington DC for a semester, intern in an area of their interest, and participate in academic classes and professional development training.  Upon successful completion of the program, students earn a total of 16 credits for the semester.

Completing this degree program will provide students with:

  • Political Literacy: Fostering a deep understanding of formal and informal politics through the study of international relations, American politics, comparative politics, and political theory.
  • Theoretical Competency:  Effectively understanding and applying mainstream or critical theoretical frameworks to the study of politics.
  • Methodological and Research Competency: Establishing research literacy in both quantitative and qualitative methodology.
  • Effective Communication: Developing high quality oral and written communication skills, including the presentation of original research.
  • Professional Formation: Actively engaging in internships  or ‘real world’ opportunities to foster professional development.

Core Curriculum:


In addition, all students must fulfill the college’s core curriculum  requirements and meet the 128 credit graduation requirement.  The First Year Experience (FYE) Seminar  is a requirement for all first-year students.
