TH 505 - Catholic Moral Theology

This course examines the basic principles of Catholic moral theology. It focuses on the roles of scripture, tradition, and the magisterium in ethical decision making and explores the following themes: freedom, conscience, sin and conversion, natural law, virtues, and moral norms as criteria for ethical judgment.

Course Learning Objectives
  • Trace the sources of Catholic Moral theology to Sacred Scripture and authoritative texts, the Church Fathers, and liturgical living including worship
  • Articulate a fundamental understanding of the human person created imago Dei
  • Express how morality is the pursuit of the genuine good of the human person’s life as a pilgrimage towards ultimate happiness aided by grace
  • Identify the issues moral theology addresses, and to be able to articulate nuanced responses to critical issues facing the Christian in the modern world
  • Become familiar with and comprehend terms specific to moral theology, such as happiness, freedom, the moral act, emotion, conscience, law, grace, virtue, sin/vice, and repentance/conversion
