TH 211 - Foundations of Catholic Spirituality


This course examines how Christian values and spiritual practices reflect an understanding of God, human identity, and the material world as the context for spiritual transformation. Students will explore the wisdom, practices, and paths of prominent Catholic spiritual traditions (including Augustinian, Benedictine, Cistercian, Carmelite, Dominican, Franciscan, and Ignatian) as a means of developing and living a deeply Christian spiritual life to enhance one’s relationship with the Triune God and others. Additionally, students will investigate the connection between spirituality, social action, and our universal call to holiness.

Course Learning Objectives
  • Explain the unique characteristics of Catholic spirituality
  • identify the roles of prayer, meditation, and contemplation within Christian spirituality
  • understand the history, characteristics, and spiritual practices of several major traditions of Catholic spirituality
  • explain the connection between spirituality and the social doctrine of the Church
