HY 318 - The History of Venice through its Art and Architecture


Credits: 4 credits

Examines the long history of the Italian republic of Venice from its earliest beginnings in the 5th century AD to the present though the window of an immersive on-site analysis of its art and architecture in order to gain unique insights into the historical contexts of the society and culture producing them,. Students will synthesize this understanding of the impact of historical contexts on artistic production by creating their own jultimedia (either print or digital) journal of SJC-in-Venice study-away experience.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Comprehend the principal styles, artists/architects, and masterpieces of Venetian art and architecture;
  2. Understand the major economic, social, political and cultural trends in the history of Venice;
  3. Analyze artwords and architecture in light of their economic, social, political, and cultural historic contexts;
  4. Correlate major events in Venice’s history with the broader trends in both Italian and global history;
  5. Understand the role played by the enviornment in the history, art, and culture of Venice as well as the impact of climatic changes on the future survivial of the city;
  6. Synthesize an awareness of the interplay between the Venetian historical context and its art and architecture by creating a mulitmedia (either print or digital) journal of the own experiences in contemporary Venice.
