SP 202 - Everday Spanish in the United States I

This online course will foster cultural awareness and increase language fluency so that students can communicate with and learn from Spanish speakers in the United States. As an online course, Everyday Spanish will offer flexibility and interactive opportunities for students to engage with Spanish speakers. In addition, students will interview native speakers for an oral history project and collaborate with classmates online through written and oral discussions, as well as synchronous and asynchronous work. The course will also have a community-based learning element in which students will use their Spanish and reflect on the culture in local communities through volunteer work with service organizations.

In cases where students have little access to native Spanish speakers, they will have opportunities to engage in meaningful research about Spanish-speaking cultures in the United States and will practice the language with peers and the instructor of the course. Yet all possibilities will be explored for connecting with Spanish speakers, including online pen pal and buddy systems, school settings, etc.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Explain the value of developing authentic connections with native Spanish speakers.
  • Begin to recognize and use appropriate language for communicating with native Spanish speakers in the United States, through reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
  • Compare and contrast language differences among Spanish speakers both within the United States and abroad.
  • Engage in the community to mutually learn and reflect upon the Spanish speaking culture.
