TH 613 - History of Black Catholics in the Church


This course explores the history of Black Catholics in the Church, highlighting various saints and holy men and women from the early Church through the present, and culminating with the contemporary experience of Black Catholics in the United States.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completing this course, you should be able to do the following:

  1. Know the characteristics (social, intellectual, cultural and religious) of the major periods covered.
  2. Think critically and evaluate objectively one’s own religious and cultural assumptions.
  3. Utilize effectively the dimensions of the reflection and group sharing process via the online format.
  4. Envision how one can maintain and nurture the History of the Church for future generations.
  5. Identify the gifts of Black Catholic Communities.
  6. Explore and discuss the Pastoral Action Plan from Congress XI.
  7. Identify key elements of the Pastoral Action Plan for Parish Life.
