TH 575 - Spiritual Direction


This course explores theological foundations and the history of spiritual direction ministry in the Church.  It examines various models of spiritual direction, skills of the spiritual director, aspects of the direction relationship, principles of discernment, and ethical guidelines for the practice of spiritual direction.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Explain spiritual direction to another.
  • Trace the theological and psychological elements underpinning spiritual direction.
  • Employ the spiritual elements of Scripture, tradition, common sense, journaling, and the arts.
  • Apply the skills of listening, theological reflection, and discernment.
  • Identify and use the Ignatian Rules for Discernment.
  • Assess your own spiritual journey and readiness for spiritual direction.
