TH 590 - Theology of the Church


This course studies the theology of the nature, function, and structures of the church. Topics include the foundation and structure of the Church, models of the Church, historical development of ecclesial life, and the ecclesiology of Vatican II.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following: 

  • Identify The Theology of the Church as a field within systematic theology and how it relates to the rest of theology. 
  • Appreciate the theological and historical contexts for the Church’s ever-evolving self-understanding and mission. 
  • Express the role of papal primacy in the theology of the Church and its place in efforts toward Christian Unity. 
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of the Second Vatican Council’s teaching, especially as found in Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes, recognizing it as a seminal ecclesial event and as a source for a revitalized vision of the Church in the third millennium. 
  • Name and summarize the 16 documents of the Second Vatican Council with appropriate grasp of their authoritative distinctions and theological and pastoral contributions. 
  • Identify the place of ministry within the theology of the Church, including the distinctions between ministry of the baptized and ecclesial ministry. 
  • Interpret and apply the teachings of the Second Vatican Council to twenty-first-century pastoral challenges.
