  • SP 101 - Elementary Spanish I


    Credits: (4 credits)

    A course for students with no prior experience in Spanish; basic vocabulary and grammar (present tense, adjective agreement, etc.) and simple conversational skills are studied.

    Notes
    The course is intended for students with no prior study of Spanish.

  
  • SP 102 - Elementary Spanish II


    Credits: 4 credits

    A course that is a continuation of Spanish 101 or for students with limited prior experience in Spanish; the remaining simple tenses and various types of pronouns are studied as vocabulary and conversational skills are expanded.

  
  • SP 200 - Spanish II


    Credits: (4 credits)

    A course for students with a strong foundation in speaking, writing, and understanding spoken and written basic Spanish; simple verb tenses are revieweed, compound tenses and commands are studied; the class is conducted in Spanish.

  
  • SP 300 - Spanish III


    Credits: (4 credits)

    This course is for students with a strong background in all skill areas; outside readings and in-class discussions on various aspects of Hispanic cultures form the basis of the course; grammar is reviewed as needed; the class is conducted entirely in Spanish.

  
  • TH 100 - Introduction to the Judeo-Christian Tradition


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Studies Judaism and Christianity from historical, theological, and scriptural perspectives. The course reflects on fundamental questions of human existence.

  
  • TH 201 - Saving Encounters


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Begins with the study of Christ as Sacrament of God and the Church as Sacrament of Christ. This course views the seven sacraments in the light of the liturgical renewal of Vatican II. It gives special consideration to the relationship of the sacraments to Christology and Ecclesiology.

  • TH 203 - Faith in the Contemporary World


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Examines faith in human life today with focus on the command to love God and others. This course explores the journey of faith of various contemporary persons. It studies the social justice dimensions of faith in church documents and other writings.

  • TH 205 - Christianity and Other World Religions


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Compares the structures and essential beliefs of Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Native American spirituality, and other religions with those of Christianity. As a comparative study, this course seeks to understand the dynamics of world religions in their points of contact with each other as responses to the demands of human life.

  • TH 206 - Introduction to the Old Testament


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Inquires into the formation and development of the Hebrew Scriptures, including an examination of their relationship to ancient Near Eastern texts. This course gives special consideration to the questions of historical reliability in relation to scriptural claims of spiritual truth.

  • TH 207 - Introduction to the New Testament


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Investigates the Gospels and letters included in the Christian Scriptures with consideration of the religious, historical, cultural and literary contexts in which they were produced.

  • TH 209 - Christian Spirituality: Life and Prayer


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Explores the relationship between God and the human person. This course considers Eastern and Western models of spirituality with special focus on the experiences of personal and communal prayer as a means of developing and living a deeply Christian spiritual life.

  • TH 211 - The Life and Letters of St. Paul


    Credits: 4 credits

    This course begins by examining the life and missionary journeys of St. Paul as recorded in the Book of Acts. It then examines the firsthand accounts of Paul’s theology according his seven “authentic” new Testament epistles.  It highlights the important themes, issues and methods of argumentation found in Pauline literature.  It also considers Paul’s impact upon the historical evolution of the Church and the relevance of his theology in the world today.

  • TH 212 - Native American Religion


    Credits: (4 credits)

    An introduction to the seven distinct cultural regions that encompass the Native American religious traditions of North America. This course focuses on the role of mythology and ritual in structuring each religious system.

  • TH 214 - Discovering Islam


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Provides an introduction to the central experiences and teachings of Islam. Course topics include: Muhammad, Qur’an, Sunna, Shi’ah, Sufis, relationships to Judaism and Christianity, the problems of modernity, and Islam in North America.

  • TH 215 - Protestant Christianity


    Credits: (4 credits)

    This course explores Protestant Christianity as it arose in Europe and Great Britain at the time of the Reformation in the sixteenth century and as it has developed in North America since the seventeenth century. Topics will include Lutheran, Reformed, and Anglican doctrine and theology, Puritanism, the Great Awakening, revivalism, the liberal denominations, fundamentalism, and Pentecostalism. American civil religion will also be considered.

  
  • TH 301 - Christology: Who is Jesus Christ?


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Considers traditional and contemporary approaches to understanding the relationship between the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith and examines the implications of each approach for Christian living.

  • TH 302 - Theology and the Environment


    Credits: 4 credits

    A study of the Christian theologies of creation and history as context for exploring the problematic interaction of human persons and the natural world.

  
  • TH 303 - Contemporary Christian Morality


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Examines biblical and theological principles for making choices consistent with faith in Jesus Christ. This course treats such topics as sexuality, war and bio-medical issues in light of the individual’s and the community’s relationships with God, neighbor, self and the world.

  • TH 307 - Death: Comparative Views


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Treats religious and non-religious views of death in the Eastern religions, ancient Greece, medieval Europe, and the contemporary West. This course examines differences in these views in relationship to ethical and theological issues concerning living, dying, death, and afterlife.

  • TH 308 - Liberation Theologies


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Explores the history, method and major themes of Latin American, African-American, feminist, and ecological theologies. This course treats key liberationist figures and their writings and stresses the meaning and practice of Christian social responsibility from a liberation perspective.

    Treats specific topics in theological studies: scripture, history, ethics, and doctrine. This course focuses on particular issues, thinkers, historical periods, or biblical texts.

  • TH 325 - Catholic Theology of Marriage and Family


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Treats the theology of the sacrament of marriage and of the family within the Catholic tradition beginning with the Bible down to the most recent teaching of the Popes and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  It will also address marriage and family as cultural and social institutions.  Discussions will cover threats to marriage in the Catholic tradition such as infidelity, divorce/remarriage, cohabitation, and “same-sex” marriage.

  • TH 410 - Seminar in Theology


    Credits: (4 credits)

    Provides an opportunity for a critical examination of a selected topic or particular theologian.

  • TH 411 - Theology Intern Program


    Credits: (2-4 credits)

    The Theology internship takes place in a professional setting that provides opportunities for the student to apply what he or she has learned in Theology courses and to gain additional knowledge and experience in a theology/religion-related profession.

    Notes
    Internships are designed to fit the interests of the student and the needs of the sponsoring organization. Interns are responsible for adhering to internship guidelines, requirements and evaluative procedures and criteria established by the Theology Department and the sponsoring organization. Interns are also responsible for providing their own means of transportation. Requirements: Junior or senior standing, a cumulative GPA or 2.5, a GPA of 3.0 or better in Theology courses, completion of at least 4 courses (16 semester hours) in the Theology major, and approval of the Department Chair.
